Maybe things haven't changed.
A dying world
He gazes at the vast caverns that dot the mountain range. The mountains are aptly named the Fool's Teeth. As the old saying went many fools have lost their teeth tumbling down them. He had left his horse back at the stable of some ramshackle inn miles ago. The footing here was too treacherous for her. He squints against the the cold wind. Here is where the hunter of the wastes he had met told him about. Something here would tell him of the past. He hoped.
An entrance to a vast network of caves grinned down at him. Cautiously he stepped inside the forgotten ways. With nothing but the faint light of his spear he pressed onward. Miles later he caught a faint shaft of starlight in the corner of his eye. He was lost. He rushed towards it. Suddenly his foot caught on a snag and he tumbled into the darkness. He was falling. He wasn't sure which way was up anymore. He crashed downward and then it was silent.
Hours? Days? He slowly opened his eyes a huge faint globe of dim light hung above him. The ground beneath him felt lumpy and crinkled when he moved. It was books they littered the floor. He could make out a statue of a huge figure hunched over a large tome. The globe was a construct of the world dotted with crystal citadels slowing orbiting it. Near a pile of old books that were crumbling at the spine he caught a glimpse of movement. He thought it must be the light playing tricks on him. Abruptly his foot caught something. He bent down pick it up. A small carved horn with intricate paintings and inlaid with rubies and sapphires.
"What do you think you've found ... in this dying world?" A deep voice rumbled throughout the deep halls. He slowly turned. It had not been a statue. A large shape lumbered into his view. It looked ancient. It looked like something the world had forgotten. "What? Have you never seen a frost giant before?" the creature rumbled " Be at ease puny thing. I am the last of my kind" He lowered his spear before the unkempt being. He had heard of them. They had fought with Hatred during the War of the Grounded Citadel.
"I'm surprised you didn't try to cut me down after what my people did. Sure we were a proud and strong people but very very stupid." the giant sighed " I was there you know four hundred years ago. I fought against the dreamers. After the battle we came here. The last of us to pick over these ruins of our former selves. When Pain stole the sun we slowly died out from starvation"
The mans eyes lit up. "Oh I see you have an interest in the frost serpent and his brood?" the giant rumbled
"You hope to stop him. Well I am sorry but there is no hope. I have been rooting around in these books for decades and have found nothing."
The giant looms closer to the man peering out of his sunken eyes. "That spear you have may I examine it? You can trust me I bear no ill will. I would have been thankful if you had ended my pointless existence"
He hesitates but slowly hands over his spear up to it. The giant slowly turns it over in his hands as he reads the carvings. Ahh this is called the Kleine Sonne. I see it still has a bit of light left in it. Yes small one. The sun is a construct of some ancient race. That is how Pain came to absorb it." The giant hands the spear back over. He shakes his head "You still mean to stop him. It is too late. He has trapped the rest the sun within a powerful force. He grows stronger still from all of our pain"
The giant huffs "Still to be forgotten is a fate worse than death" he grins which is fairly ghastly to normal folk "Twice you have shown me mercy and I shall show you my thanks" The giant walks over to a huge bow twice as tall as the man. "I am Eurytos, the last of my kind and I shall guide you across the Great Nothing to Hell's port and the frozen sea where the serpent lies"
The traveler turns to follow the great one but is taken aback by a fierce growl. In his path the glimpse has shown to be a huge white and black striped tiger as big as a horse with teeth like daggers. The man steels himself. The giant stops "Fear not. Shrike here will bear you across the wastes. You would not make it halfway if you walked." the giant bends over and pets the great beast. "See he has a tail and ears like you." he beckons "Come now there is not much time" With that they travel on into the depths.
They come to an opening that reveals a cold forest and trickling stream. They stop at the bend. Eurytos turns to the man and then gazes out to the north. The three trudge toward oblivion. The Great Nothing lives up to its name. As far as the eye can see white dunes, crystal trees and hulking ruins dot the landscape.
His huge hand sweeps before him "Behold the great empire of the Children of the Sun" he bellows with a newfound strength. They journey on. This time with something that wasn't there before.
A purpose.

13 pulls and 2 hours later. We downed the first of 4 savage bosses that came out yesterday. We barely beat enrage but hey it's still a win.
May you always walk in the light of the crystal.
